- Listening and Reading Comprehension
- As children develop comprehension of books read aloud or independently, they explore the uses and functions of written language. They begin to construct meaning, eventually applying critical skills to make inferences and draw conclusions.
- Number writing
- Children learn to write numbers using proper stroke order.
- Letter writing
- Children use knowledge of letter names and shapes to write both uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Phonics skills
- To read independently, children must understand the relationship between the sounds in spoken words and the letters that represent those sounds.
- Sight words
- Sight words are words that cannot be sounded out (the, where, etc.), so they must be learned by sight and memorized.
- Shapes
- Children learn to recognize the defining properties of shapes (such as a square having four sides of equal length and a triangle having three sides) and identify them in different rotations.
- Art and drawing
- As they draw, children develop spatial reasoning, visual acuity, and hand control, which later helps them write letters.
