- Short and long vowels
- Children learn to read and spell words with regular short vowel patterns (bed) and regular long vowel patterns (bake, meet).
- Consonant blends
- Children learn to sound out words that contain consonant blends or clusters (plum, street, fast).
- Consonant digraphs
- Children learn to sound out words that contain consonant digraphs (chop, fish).
- Problem-solving skills
- Children learn to solve problems using strategies such as estimation, rounding, and counting.
- Music
- Making and listening to music can increase a child's creativity as well as support language, math, and physical development.
- Rhyming
- Children learn that rhyming words have the same ending sounds and often share spelling patterns, which helps develop vocabulary.
- Word building
- As children put together letters to make words, they learn how even small changes (changing mat to man to can) result in completely new words.
- Storytelling
- Children learn the patterns of oral language and stories by listening to and repeating what they hear and read.
- Advanced vocabulary
- Children broaden their vocabulary by learning new words for familiar concepts, for example new ways to say happy such as joyful, jubilant, or ecstatic.
